The Parable of The Seeds

Text: Mark 4:21–34

In this sermon, we delve into the teachings contained in “The Parable of the Seeds.” The focal point is the radiant light coming from the word of God. The sermon expands on the diverse responses produced by this divine message.

Drawing parallels from Paul’s experience at the Areopagus, we witness various reactions to the word of God. Some answered with sneers and mockery, while others adopted a postponing stance, stating, “We will hear you again.” However, there were those who totally joined Paul in embracing the transformative power of the divine word.

The analogy of the sower confirms the unrelenting nature of divine sowing—continuous and unstoppable. A true believer is one who has been awakened to the never-ending call of the divine, an individual who is always attuned to hearing, and we are encouraged to be on the lookout for forces that oppose our receptive nature, whether it be the devil, cares, thorns, or worries. Acknowledging the inevitability of tribulation, it reminds us that through such trials, we shall enter the kingdom of God.

The narrative skillfully weaves together the teachings of Jesus, presenting him as the unhidden light—akin to a lamp not hidden under a bushel. Echoing John’s portrayal of Jesus as the light of the world, the sermon highlights the importance of individual growth. Signs of this growth appear in a growing aversion to sin and a deepening love for Christ.
