Be Still And Know I Am God: Soothing Words For Troubled Times

Text: Psalm 46

The verse “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) reminds us that trouble is a near and constant presence in our lives (Psalm 22:11). Since the fall of man in the garden, despair has been an inherent part of our human experience. Even the faithful of God are not exempt from the challenges and difficulties of this world.

In Acts 17:28, Paul speaks of our existence in God, emphasizing that in Him we live, move, and have our being. This is the profound confidence that believers hold, knowing that our very existence is grounded in God. We are called to truly know God, to have a deep and intimate understanding of His character and nature (Psalm 46:10).

The sons of Korah, in writing this psalm, address true believers—those whom God has called and set His love upon (Deuteronomy 7:7-8). Israel, as a nation, was well-acquainted with trouble. The term “trouble” refers to being in a narrow, confined place physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

In the face of these challenges, the psalmist proclaims God as our refuge. Despite the nearness of trouble, we find solace and safety in Him. He is our place of shelter and protection amidst the storms of life.

May we be encouraged by the reminder that, even in the midst of trouble, we can seek refuge in God and find comfort in knowing that He is ever-present with us.
