“Follow Me”: The Lord’s Call of the Four Fishermen.

Text: Mark 1:16 – 20

In Mark’s account of the Lord’s call of the four fishermen, he makes liberal use of the word “immediately,” his favorite word. Though the response to the Lord’s call is remarkable, in this sermon priority is given to the identity of the caller, the nature of the call, and the specifics of the call. Jesus is the caller, a humble man who subjected himself to the Father and the Spirit. The call is unique and authoritative.
Jesus called the men to fall in line behind him. He didn’t ask their permission but he was anything but rude. The call is one to unique discipleship because these men would go on to form the foundation of the church.
